In an article on TCPalm.com today that we highlighted on OHI, Susan Nefzger warned local Real Estate people to watch out for “Internet scams that guarantee Page 1 ranking or offers that sound too good to be true like Page 1 ranking in 24 hours”. And the key word there is “guarantee”, because while no one can guarantee you anything, it can be done and done in a few hours.
Just for fun, we’ll prove it can:

Today’s OHI post supporting Susan’s article and this one are both page one, top five.
Also, because Nefzger is an uncommon name and thus an easy proof as a keyword, we rolled launching an “Apartment & Condos” category into our OHI post featuring Susan’s article, to show that even using generic search terms, in a competitive category like apartment rentals, you can get page one rankings, in a single day, across the spectrum of relevant search phrases:

So it’s not that it’s impossible to do, it’s that you have to know what the factors are that search engines use to rank the results they return, and employ them when you’re creating content and designing pages.
If you build a site with quality content and quality links, you’ll score high in the search engines, because your site is recognized as a consistent provider of quality content, and that’s what search engines look for. All of the formulas and algorithms the searches use are designed to reward you for creating great content, and penalize you for looking for a short cut.
I think helping to educate area business people so they can discern between what is “scam” and what is “good Internet business practice” is essential. The Internet is underutilized locally and to a large degree, I think it’s because you’d be hard pressed to find any business person in this area who hasn’t invested their limited capital in some sort of Internet promise that went awry. It’s not disimilar to the diet industry. There’s a million books and magic-pills and everyone wants an easy answer, but the reality is it will take time and effort and educating yourself. Further, the proliferation of snake-oil salesman in both industries make it difficult for the consumer to seperate the wheat from the chaffe. The good news is that the “Create quality content, and quality links” mantra, is as true as “Eat less, exercise more.”
